Countertop colors that bring your kitchen together
As you begin imagining your cabinet and countertop renovation, we first suggest considering what color countertop will pop in your kitchen. When making a selection, it can be helpful to keep in mind your kitchen’s lighting, your ideal look and feel for your space, and the color and finishes of your cabinets, backsplash, and floor. In general, light colors on kitchen countertops can make a space look open and light, while darker hues can add drama and elegance.
White and off-white
White and off-white countertops took the lead among new and remodeled kitchens in the 2025 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, and for good reason: white is clean, classic, and extremely versatile. Whether you opt for pure white countertops, speckled white, or delicate marbling, you can find a look that suits your dream kitchen. White works beautifully in kitchens of any size, helping the space feel bright and welcoming.
White countertops also work well with many cabinet colors, from neutral to bold. If you have blue cabinets, white countertops can lend your space an airy and coastal feel. Meanwhile, pairing white countertops with wood tone cabinets makes your space feel classic and warm—think cottage or farmhouse. Opting for white countertops and white cabinets is another popular choice that brings crispness, minimalism, and modernity to a kitchen.

Black
Black adds a touch of drama and luxury to your kitchen. Black or deep charcoal countertops pair well with white and off-white cabinets if you want the stark black-and-white look, but they can also work well with shades of blue, green, red, and stains from light to dark.
If you’re really looking to up the glam factor, dark countertops also pair well with dark cabinets. When opting for a black-on-black cabinet and countertop combination, consider how you can use both natural and artificial light to keep your space feeling cozy and well-lit.
Gray, beige, and cream
Midtone color countertops—gray, beige, and cream—pair well with brightly colored cabinets or neutral hues, and they hide crumbs, dust, or coffee drips better than their light or dark counterparts. Midtoned countertops are both classic and warm, both soft and striking, and are a perfect midpoint between bright white and deep black.

Wood tones
If you love the look of natural wood countertops, you’ve picked your color scheme and narrowed down your material in one fell swoop! Wood tones come in a variety of hues: lighter wood tones make your kitchen feel rustic and cozy, while darker wood tones are rich and elegant, and both pair with numerous colors. You can even use more than one wood tone in your kitchen! Your kitchen designer can help you select complementary stains for your countertops and cabinets.
Countertop materials that look great and work hard
The next step on your kitchen countertop journey is choosing a material. We’ve outlined a few top trends below to help you narrow down your favorite materials.
Quartz
Quartz, commonly referred to as engineered quartz, took the lead among countertop materials in the 2025 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, with 39% of homeowners selecting it for their kitchens. While it is not heat resistant, quartz is durable and nonporous (and therefore doesn't require sealing), and it’s easy to clean. Quartz also comes in many colors: whether you like white, gray, off-white, cream, black, or charcoal, quartz has it all, and it can even come with delicate lines or flecks for some added depth and visual texture.
If you’re looking for natural quartz for your countertops, this material is known as quartzite. Quartzite is scratch and heat resistant but requires sealing to protect from stains, and it is generally more expensive than quartz.
Granite
Like quartz, granite comes in a variety of colors. However, because it’s natural stone, no two pieces are alike! Granite countertops are unique and durable, and while they do require sealing to protect from stains, this material is both heat and scratch resistant.
Marble
Marble is another beautiful countertop material that features natural veining and comes in several colors, from white to gray to cream to black. Something to keep in mind is that marble is a relatively soft and porous natural stone and must be sealed regularly to protect against scratches, stains, and other damage.
Wood
Wood countertops are typically made of butcher blocks. Butcher blocks are composed of multiple pieces of wood that are glued together to create a solid surface. Like wood kitchen cabinets, wood countertops can be made from different wood species and finished with beautiful stains.
Other materials that may be used in wood countertops are reclaimed wood and wood slab; these tend to be more expensive to install than butcher blocks because they use large pieces of natural wood instead of several pieces glued together.

Contrasting countertops
Who says all of your kitchen countertops have to be the same? If you have a kitchen island, you can consider a contrasting countertop for a chic accent. We’re especially loving the warm and inviting look of butcher block on your island that offsets stone cabinet countertops!
Finishing your countertops with the perfect edge
Now that you’re familiar with some of the most popular countertop colors and materials, we want to touch on another decision that you will make during the remodel process: the shape of your countertop edges. Your trusted kitchen designer can help you in identifying what edges will work with your chosen countertop materials and style preferences.
Some of the most popular countertop edge shapes are the square, eased, and beveled designs. Square edges feature sharp 90 degree angles, while eased edges appear square in shape but have slightly rounded corners. Beveled edges, meanwhile, feature a 45 degree angle on the countertop borders to create a sloping look on your countertop edges.
Square, eased, and beveled edges are clean and minimalist. If you’re looking for countertop edges that are more traditional, check out the ogee and waterfall type!
